Paperboy is about to deliver another buzz-worthy show at the Talkin’ Donkey Saturday.
Last month, the band packed the house at the Salvation Army-owned establishment for its CD release party in support of new album, The News.
“We couldn’t be happier with the response we’ve gotten from the community. We sold out the last show and couldn’t believe it. It really goes to show that Vernon, while constantly in Kelowna’s shadow, is a far more supportive place for up-and-coming musicians and artists alike,” said Luke Mortenson, Paperboy vocalist/guitarist.
While each show has been gathering more and more momentum, the lads from Paperboy say they never lose sight of the small, and most important things.
“The people that come out to the shows are our friends, family and co-workers, so we want to work that much harder at every little detail, so it’s that much more memorable,” said Mortenson.
True to their word, Paperboy has hand folded 50 limited tickets in the traditional origami style. Each one at some point was carefully creased and marked.
“I took an English class in college with Kevin McPherson, and he’d always be cooking up ideas for public events. They seemed so outlandish at the time, but perhaps it’s because no one else was doing it. But the idea of making an event so unique that it probably won’t happen again really resonates with people. I don’t see a lot of people on their cell phones,” said Mortenson.
Opening for Paperboy is Vernon’s own Naked Ghosts, while the second act, Heard in the Mountains, hails from the Lower Mainland.
“While echoes of chamber and symphonic themes can often be heard in their compositions, these young men blend organic textures with synthesized sensibilities for a sound that will leave you breathless,” said Mortenson.
Saturday’s all-ages show begins at 6 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the Talkin’ Donkey (5400 24th St.) as well as at Eclectibles (downtown Vernon across from the Towne Theatre.) Cost is $10 for adults and $7 for students (with valid ID.)
