Rise up soul sisters and brothers, Vancouver’s City Soul Choir is about to take Vernon on a Global Journey to explore some of the world’s greatest song traditions.
Led by music director Brian Tate, the choir performs at Trinity United Church, Saturday, June 21.
“The more than 90 singers who make up the choir share a love of music that lifts the soul, moves the body, and fills the heart,” said Tate.
The secular choir’s repertoire comes from the world’s great inspirational music traditions including R&B, world, soul, gospel, funk, spirituals, and more.
“We sing of joy, hope, and social justice. Our audiences love to groove, move, and feel the joy,” said Tate.
While in Vernon, members of the choir will perform soulful music from Haiti, Cuba, Kenya, Spain, Georgia, New Zealand, and other exotic destinations.
Music from Canada is also on the program including that from the Lil’wat First Nations in the west and travelling to Newfoundland outposts in the east.
“Joining the choir are several guests from our community of Vernon including the amazingly talented Neil Fraser on guitar, Pause and Sing First Nations Drumming Group and Jabulani African drumming group as well as some of our talented young choral singers,” said Soul City Choir member Julie Armitage, who is based in Vernon.
The concert is a fundraiser for Bill’s Place, a sober living house in Vernon for men recovering from addiction, which is run by the John Howard Society.
