Two Vernon area artists have designed and made the new sculpture that will be presented to the recipients of Okanagan Arts Awards  in March.

The Arts Council of the Central Okanagan (ARTSCO) revealed the new design Jan. 18, featuring a three-dimensional stainless steel sculpture titled Okanelemental, created by Julie Oakes (owner of Headbones Gallery in Vernon) with the help of Commonage blacksmith metal artist Doug Alcock.

Oakes’ design was chosen from among three finalists.

“All the awards submitted were of very high calibre,” said Elke Lange, ARTSCO executive director. “The jurors considered originality, effectiveness, craftsmanship and artist statement in determining the final award. Congratulations to all the artists who submitted. The entries were fabulous.”

The Okanagan Arts Awards celebrate the arts, artists and supporters in 14 categories.

Created by ARTSCO to recognize individuals and groups for their outstanding achievement in the arts, the awards underline the importance of the arts to the people and communities in the Okanagan-Thompson regions.

There is still time to nominate individuals and organizations in the various categories for the awards. Deadline is Friday and nomination packages are available at www.okanaganartsawards.com or by contacting ARTSCO at 250-861-4123.

The Okanagan Arts Awards celebration takes place March 22 at the Mary Irwin Theatre in Kelowna’s Rotary Centre for the Arts. The evening features a showcase of artists and performers from throughout the region, along with the official awards presentations.

Tickets for  the celebration concert are available starting Feb. 10 at the Rotary Centre for the Arts box office, order at (250) 717-5304 or www.selectyourtickets.com.
