Vernon music students tune up for festival

The Vernon Registered Music Teachers festival starts with vocal students performing for the adjudicator Feb. 17.

The Vernon Registered Music Teachers festival is right around the corner.

“Students from throughout the North Okanagan who study piano and voice under a registered music teacher are given the opportunity to compete for scholarships at this annual local festival,” said VRMT spokesperson Charity Van Gameren. “Students work for many months in preparation of being on the stage to perform with the opportunity of being adjudicated by skilled musicians.”

This year’s vocal adjudicator is Eeva-Maria Kopp, who is originally from Finland and is currently a resident of Kelowna.

Kopp has her master’s degree in music education and a bachelor’s degree in voice pedagogy.

Piano adjudicator Joseph Beraducci is an examiner with the Royal Conservatory of Music. He has his bachelor’s of music from UBC and a master’s from Western Washington University.

The vocal festival runs throughout the day Friday, Feb. 17, while the piano festival continues from March 3 to 7. All performances take place at All Saints Anglican Church, 3205 27 St.

Scholarship recipients will perform at a gala concert March 11 at 2 p.m. at All Saints.
