Vernon’s Hub is saved by superheroes

Kelowna’s New Vintage Theatre’s new production, The Astonishing Adventures Of Awesome Girl & Radical Boy, plays at The Hub this week.

Pow! Pop! Wham! Kablamo! And that’s just the very first panel.

A rag-tag group of superheroes are taking over Vernon this week as part of Kelowna’s New Vintage Theatre’s new production, The Astonishing Adventures Of Awesome Girl & Radical Boy.

The show takes place at The Hub Arts Collective and marks the first time New Vintage has presented a production in Vernon.

“(New Vintage) is a fantastic semi-professional theatre company that was created by the ingenious Bonnie Gratz,” said The Hub’s owner, theatre instructor, actor and director Matt Brown. “This is an amazing theatre company that believes in synergy, collaboration, community support and paying artists. This company is only in its second year of operation and already it is growing a very fond following and reputation for itself.”

Written by Ethan Cole and directed by Gratz, The Astonishing Adventures Of Awesome Girl & Radical Boy follows Nick, a struggling animator at Super Action Comics with dreams of making it to the comic book big time.

By night he rids the world of evil, until he meets Julia Jones, aka Awesome Girl, a gorgeous and talented rival animator who refuses to collaborate on a series with Nick because “her hyper intelligence makes finding suitable matches impossible.”

But this is not the only trouble that lurks at Super Action.

There is also a mysterious split that took place between the charismatic Maxine and present manager Gordon, whose darkness inside is revealed in the office and on the mean streets under a full moon.

“Don’t miss this hilarious, campy and action-packed, award winning musical by Calgarian Ethan Cole, perfect for ages six and up,” said Brown.

The play takes the stage Thursday and Friday, April 3 and 4, at 7:30 p.m. at The Hub, 2906 30th Ave. beside the Towne Theatre. Tickets are available at the door and at www.ticketseller.ca.
