“The Waxed Surface” by contemporary artist Kathleen Menges is the latest show at the Kariton Art Gallery in Abbotsford.
The show opens July 20 and runs until Aug. 14 at the gallery, 2387 Ware St. It features several abstract paintings in cold wax and oil.
Menges’ experience with wax paintings began 20 years ago when she first saw an encaustic piece. Transfixed by the painting’s depth and intrigued with its ephemeral qualities, she began exploring the medium herself using both cold and hot wax applications.
During this exploration, she recognized the passion and potential for herself as an artist to discover and cultivate.
Menges’ intention when creating her art is “to fashion a body of work that may bring a sense of peace to the viewer.” Her style ranges from representational paintings to abstracts, which allow her to work in “a meditative state flowing freely.” She rarely signs the front of her work, believing it has “a compositional signature of its own.”
Residing in Abbotsford, Menges has had numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the Lower Mainland, and her encaustic, cold wax and acrylic paintings are held in collections in Canada and the U.S.
An opening reception for the Kariton show takes place Sunday, July 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. The gallery’s hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
