White Rock calls for gateway designs

White Rock is looking for a design element that welcomes the public and enhances its presence as an arts community.

The City of White Rock is inviting designs for a multi-functional structure to hold banners at the city’s main entranceway, on Johnston Road at North Bluff Road.

The Gateway Competition is aimed at finding a design element that welcomes the public to White Rock, and enhances the understanding of White Rock as an arts community.

The competition is open to artists, designers and students who are residents of Canada; the design must be weather-resistant, vandal-proof and require only limited long-term maintenance. The theme should reflect the city’s natural or historical references and “be an invitation to a city of vibrant cultural activity.”

The creator of the winning design – determined by a juried committee of arts professionals and community members – will receive $10,000 and a plaque on the finished structure citing credit. Second- and third-place finishers will each receive $1,000.
