Wiebes weave Christmas cheer

Shane and Angela Wiebe sing music from their Christmas album Christmas with You at Vernon's Emmanuel Baptist Church Dec. 2.

Get in the holiday spirit with a Christmas concert, featuring The Wiebes, at Vernon’s Emmanuel Fellowship Baptist Church Friday, Dec. 2.

The duo, actually a married couple, Shane and Angela Wiebe, will sing Christmas carols and music from their Christmas album Christmas with You.

“The Wiebes have earned many accolades since starting their singing career, such as a Covenant Award and landing their Christmas album on the AC (adult contemporary) Top 50 list alongside other major artists such as Michael Bublé and Mariah Carey,” said Aaron Wilson, administrator at Emmanuel Baptist.

Singing together since the day they met, The Wiebes’  first adventure began long before they started dating in year 2000 when both were members of The Columbia Singers and went on tour to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The group was led by Tony Funk, who would end up bringing the couple together again two years later.

As the story goes, Angela needed a pianist to accompany her on violin. She called Tony for the number of someone who could help her last minute, and was given Shane’s.

The couple began performing regularly together, started dating in June of 2002, and were married in December, 2003.

The following May, Shane began his journey to a top five spot on CTV’s hit television show, Canadian Idol, having the privilege of working with musicians such as Lionel Richie and Gordon Lightfoot.

In June 2009, The Wiebes released their debut album, Into Your Light, which won Inspirational Album of the Year at the 2010 Covenant Awards. That winter, their Christmas record, Christmas With You, hit the AC airwaves.

The Wiebes have just released their fourth studio album –– a project they have been dreaming about recording since they met.

The Wiebes currently live in Stratford, Ont. with their two children, Joelle, five, and Josiah, four. The family often tours together whenever and wherever they can, and are looking forward to their concert in Vernon.

Friday’s performance starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the Emmanuel Fellowship Baptist Church office, 3412-15th Ave., or at the Talkin’ Donkey. A dessert buffet will be served after the concert, and is included in the ticket price.
