“…only he is an emancipated thinker who is not afraid to write foolish things.”
– Anton Chekhov
The Campbell River Arts Council is offering a unique opportunity for writers to attend a series of workshops with one of Canada’s finest young poets Matt Rader.
Rader is offering the Arts Council a series based on the overall theme of Writing Life. He says: “How do we write about our lives and how are our lives different when we write? How do we encounter other lives in our writing and introduce our lives to others? How do we make our lives as writers and make writing part of our lives?” The first workshop will be held on May 15 from 1-4pm and is entitled ‘Get Your Work Seen and Heard: Building Literary Imagery’. This workshop will explore how language makes appeals to our bodies, how writers build strength, definition, and expression through our bodies, and how bodies give meaning to writing. The second workshop in the series will take place on May 29 from 1-4 p.m. Entitled Taking Shape: An Exploration of Literary Form this workshops asks, according to Rader, “How do writers discover and utilize the shapes of their writings? How does a poet know how her lines should be arranged or a fiction writer decide to tell his story as series of flashbacks? What are the advantages and disadvantages of planning the shape of your writing before you write? Investigate the function of literary form and strategies for turning it into and advantage in your writing.”
The cost of each workshop is $40 and will be held at the Sybil Andrews Cottage. Call the Arts Council at 923-0213 to register.
