Everything will be “golden” for the Canadian Federation of University Women, Vernon Club in 2015.
The local club is celebrating its 50th anniversary of supporting education and women’s issues locally, provincially, nationally and internationally.
Some projects that CFUW members are involved in include stocking the bookshelves at the food bank, the First Nations Friendship Centre and the Women’s Transition House; providing two post-secondary scholarships for local Okanagan College students; sponsoring local forums such as the January 2014 Vernon library discussion on prostitution laws and the November 2014 discussion on early childhood education and day care; and establishing Capsule College, one of the first Vernon speaker series.
A number of special events are planned, beginning with monthly meeting flashbacks of the club’s history from 1965 to 2015. Tea with a Twist will round off the celebrations on June 6 at Okanagan College.
“We have compiled a list of former members from our archives but know it is not complete,” said Mary Leah de Zwart, with the CFUW Vernon branch. “If you are a former member, our anniversary committee would like to hear from you.
“Please take a few minutes to contact me at 250-545-5458 or maryleah@shaw.ca so we can add you to our 50th anniversary mailing list.”
CFUW is a non-profit, non-partisan, self-funded organization working towards the improvement of the status of women and girls, the promotion of quality public education and advancement of human rights, justice and peace.
“Membership is open to any woman who supports these goals and our local program includes many special interest groups. We are affiliated with the International Federation of University Women.”
Those interested are invited to attend a monthly meeting, normally held the third Monday of the month, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Schubert Centre. There is a $15 charge for lunch.
