The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is providing an action plan for White Rock families who are providing long-term care for a person with dementia.
The society has organized free support groups for sharing tips and strategies on long-term care and has an online guide which assess the needs of a person with dementia.
“It is important to develop a plan of action,” said Avalon Tournier, the society’s support and education co-ordinator in White Rock.
According to the society, the meetings also help alleviate the feelings of isolation and loneliness caregivers can have and helps create friendships with others whose lives are affected by dementia.
Other suggestions from Tournier for caregivers is that they should take some basic steps before visiting a loved one with dementia and meet with service providers to ensure there is a clear understanding of what needs to be taken care of.
“Talk to family members, friends, neighbours, their physician, health agencies and other people who are in contact with the person,” said Tournier. “Communicate clearly what you are hoping to achieve. Be prepared with questions you would like to have answered, and the services you are seeking.“
