The dictionary describes a Bohemian as a person or artist who lives a free-spirited life and believes in truth, freedom and love. This definition describes the spirit by which professional dance instructor and former national and international dance champion Tracy Holly lives and dances.
As director of Bohemian Bollywood Bling, an all-day eclectic dance event taking place Nov. 8 at the Vernon Eagles Hall, her intention is to present a selection of offerings available in the Okanagan dance community.
“This event is my way of acknowledging and appreciating the talent and diversity of dance that is right at your feet — no pun intended,” said Holly. “In my career, I have taught, performed, competed and explored an array of dance styles; this kept me excited about dance throughout my life.
“The Bohemian Bollywood Bling concept captures my thoughts, feelings and expertise in the world of movement to music.”
Holly will showcase her newest venture, the increasingly popular Bollywood, which has evolved from traditional Indian dance to include a collage of styles set to chart-topping Bollywood songs. Latin, disco, hip-hop, jazz and even the Charleston are incorporated in her choreography with the Holly Bollywood Dance Troupe which performs regularly throughout the Okanagan.
“And who doesn’t love the bling,” said Holly. “Bobbles and bangles, shimmering and shining, gleaming and glowing, it’s an eccentric vibration that not only looks good, but feels great.
“I truly hope you enjoy Bohemian Bollywood Bling, and most of all, I hope this ignites the fire for you to participate in these wonderful styles of dance.”
Bohemian Bollywood Bling presents five area dance instructors who will join Holly in offering 45-minute workshops from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. In addition to Bollywood with Holly, Chilean dance master Samuelz Galvez will present the rhythms of Bachata, Ruth McGrath offers happy line dancing, Lisa Schofield turns up the heat with sultry burlesque jazz, Ruth Hoyte presents Egyptian dance and Sareena Nickoli will get you burning with Zumba.
In the evening get your glam on, meet up with friends and grab a partner for the evening dance. Groove to Bollywood, Latin, swing, ballroom and more with dance instructors on hand to guide you through the moves. Exhibitor displays in the evening will include Spinners Sound Centre, Dean’s Tailor Shop, Belly Dance Wear and Caffe Mazzega. And instructor and performer Hoyt will be breaking open her treasure trove of costumes and bling to offer a selection for sale to the public.
Bohemian Bollywood Bling takes place Saturday at the Vernon Eagles Hall, 5101-25th Ave. Workshops begin at 10 a.m. Tickets are available at the door.
