When Vernon Friends of the Library put out the call for donations of books, they could not have anticipated the response from the community.
More than 50 large boxes are filled with fiction, non-fiction and children’s books, all new or next-to-new and are on their way to Bella Bella. The community was devastated by a fire recently, which burned down the building containing the post office, grocery store and library.
“After our request for books was printed in The Morning Star, we started receiving donations of very high quality books until we finally had to say ‘stop,’ as we could no longer reach high enough to put the boxes on the pallet,” said Linda Wills, with Friends of the Library. “The Vernon Friends of the Library are pleased to think of these books going to a library that was devastated by fire earlier this year and want to thank all those who so generously gave a donation to help us achieve our goal — it’s a great example of pay it forward.”
The books have been shipped to Vancouver thanks to the generous offer of free shipping from Diamond Delivery, a Kelowna-based transportation and freight company that believes in corporate giving. Once in Vancouver, the books were loaded onto a container to be barged up to Bella Bella.
