Chris Madsen is helping to “bring back the light,” with the upcoming Winter Solstice Celebration.
“This is a chance to celebrate as a community and give friends and families an opportunity to have an awesome venue for a night of fun, and winter solstice is the perfect time for it,” said Madsen, who will also be performing at the event.
The Winter Solstice Celebration takes place Dec. 21 at the Vernon Recreation Centre from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. and features a wide variety of Okanagan performers, including Tanya Lipscombe, Blackberry Wood, Angela Roy and Space Monkey, as well as 16 local vendors exhibiting their crafts and foods.
“All over the world there are celebrations occurring as this is not just a typical winter solstice,” said Madsen. “Many cultures and prophesies have pointed to this time as being special — the Mayans have been meticulous time-keepers for thousands of years and also mark this solstice as being of huge significance.
“Regardless of what happens, or not, it is a fantastic opportunity for us here in the Okanagan to make the shortest day of the year a wonderful celebration.”
The event is produced by the newly formed non-profit society, Halcyon, a grassroots group of people interested in knitting communities together to thrive and share each other’s gifts and talents locally.
