Davison Orchards celebrates Canada Day

Fun for families

Home-baked apple pie with ice cream followed by an ice-cold Applelanche are both on the menu today as Davison Orchards celebrates Canada’s 144th birthday.

The farm’s Canada Day celebrations are highlighted by an old-fashioned barbecue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with chicken or beef on a bun, accompanied by salad and dessert.

All of the farm’s usual fun activities will be open, including family games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Crazy Cow Kids Corral — admission is $4 for children, parents free.

Check out the huge sandbox, complete with a half-buried farm truck and ride-on lawnmowers. This area is covered with a shade cloth for safe fun all summer long. Make your way through the maze or explore the Farm Jail, complete with an escape hatch. Get the best view on the farm by climbing up to the tree house, then take the slide back down. The duck races are a highlight — using old fashioned hand pumps to race plastic duckies ($2 each) through the water chutes. Don’t forget to try milking Bessie the cow, driving the John Deere trikes around the track, and of course the corn bins offer loads of fun. There are also farm facts to learn all around the Kids Corral, as well as corn tippees, straw jumps, and more. It’s good clean, farm fun – with great family picture opportunities.

Over at the Critter Corral, don’t forget your quarters to get a handful of goat feed and watch the goats as they run up and over the goat walk, eager to munch on your gift. Check out the chickens, say hello to Salsa the 25-year-old donkey, and peek at the bunnies, happy in the shade of their hut. There is no admission charge for the Critter Corral.

Davison Orchards is at 3111 Davison Rd., off Bella Vista Road in Vernon.
