The Okanagan is an area that thrives off agriculture of nearly all types and is a business and year-round income for many families.
For a region that relies so heavily on agriculture, it is an industry that often seems to be removed from the public’s attention. But at Davison Orchards on Saturday, Breakfast on the Farm provides the opportunity for those unfamiliar with farming or food production to come have a delicious breakfast and leave with a better understanding of agriculture.
“Food tastes better when you know the story behind it and this is your opportunity,” said Shane Landreville, marketing and events coordinator at Davison Orchards. “A delicious and inexpensive pancake breakfast gives you a great reason to join the celebration first thing in the morning.
“Our volunteers will be serving your all-inclusive breakfast of eggs, pancakes, sausages, apple cider syrup and a beverage. Kids’ plates are $4.95 and adults are $5.95. Davison Orchards is also offering a free farm business tour to give you an inside look at the production and operation of the farm including the apple juice press, apple peeling, packing area and the bakery.”
U-pick apple tours round out the day’s activities and include a ride into the orchard on the Johnny Popper train and a 10-pound bag of apples.
“Breakfast on the Farm is bigger than Davison Orchards, it’s bigger than one branch of farming and it represents the entire industry of agriculture,” said Laura Shaw, retail operations director and Davison family member. “Farmers and their organizations are set up with booths and displays to share stories with all guests in a fun and interactive way.”
The fun includes photo booths and ag swag from Ag More Than Ever and Farm Credit Canada, take-home information and samples from the Okanagan Starling Awareness Program and the BC Grapegrowers, BC 4-H and their mascot Frisco, Fieldstone Organics with samples and a mill for you to grind grains, Slow Food Society giving you information on their movement in the Okanagan, the BC Cattlemen’s Association with several farmers and kids’ swag, and the Okanagan Dairy Association with live calves. There is lots to see and do while learning about farming and how your food is grown.
Ag More Than Ever is a national organization created to improve perceptions and promote positive dialogue about agriculture in Canada and is working with Davison Orchards to produce the first ever event of this type in B.C.
The pancake breakfast runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Farms will be set up with their interactive displays and activities from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the farm business tours leave at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. U-pick apple tours run between 10 a.m., and 4 p.m. and Davison Orchards Market, Café, and kids’ play area is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
