For the past few years clients and staff at the Family Resource Centre have lived with the threadbare carpeting in the hallways and offices at the centre. Not only were the floors unattractive and could no longer survive cleaning, they were becoming a health hazard for those with allergies and sensitivities. Of particular concern were the children’s counselling rooms where sand therapy and other therapeutic play exercises took place.
Jan Schulz, executive director of the FRC, relayed these concerns to the board of directors and a plan was set to start a fundraising initiative to replace the carpet with vinyl plank flooring.
“The response from our community was amazing,” said Schulz. “The suppliers, the furniture movers, the painters and the granting organizations all came on board to support this huge undertaking and we are so very grateful.”
Recently, the FRC invited all those supporters for refreshments and a tour of the centre offices to see the results of their generosity.
The event was attended by Ken James and Greg McKinnon from Kal Rotary, Mayor Rob Sawatsky and Catherine Lord from the City of Vernon (also with CFNO), Janice Mori, Herb Wong, Ruby Sharma and Leanne Hammond from the Community Foundation, Dave Derksen from End of the Roll and George Prince of The Handy Prince.
Also in attendance were Rick Schulz and board members who helped with clearing the decks for the floors to be laid. Vernon Moving and Storage employees who moved the furniture and file cabinets, as well as the flooring installer, were unable to attend.
