Freedom. It means something different to everyone and in the minds of those with special needs, it means everything.
On Saturday, the Vernon Elks Lodge is hosting the Freedom to Enjoy Life’s Little Things fundraiser for the resource room at Clarence Fulton Secondary School, with a goal of generating enough funds to purchase a tandem excursion bike.
“There are a dozen students with special needs at Fulton,” said event organizer Nina Kaufman.
“This would give them an opportunity to explore the community and/or get from class to class with the sense of being independent.”
The modified bike has a high back with chest straps and a seat-belt for safety. An adult rides behind the student and is in control of steering.
Saturday’s fundraiser will feature a performance by local band No Bad Days, with door prizes for every ticket purchased, said Kaufman, adding numerous sponsors have come on board with contributions.
“The Elks is yet another community minded non-profit association, volunteering endless hours in support of community organizations needing assistance,” she said.
Those who are unable to attend can drop off a donation at the Elks lounge (upstairs) Tuesday to Saturday after 2 p.m.
Tickets to the fundraiser, which starts at 8 p.m., are $10 and can be purchased at the Elks Lodge, located at 3103-30th St. Call 250-549-1883 for more information.
