Group gets an early start to produce sharing

The Armstrong Food Initiative Society welcomes produce from farmers to be given to those who don't have access to fresh fruit and veggies

The Armstrong Food Initiative Society (AFIS) will be starting sooner this year as a result of the earlier start to the growing season.

Some of the growers have an abundance of early crops such as lettuce, spinach, radishes or rhubarb which they would like to donate to the Produce Sharing Program at the Community Garden behind the red caboose.

Opening day is July 4 and anyone with excess produce is encouraged to bring it to the volunteers at the Community Garden between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. From 10 a.m. to noon, the fruit and vegetables will be passed on to people who do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

The program runs every Monday from July 4 to Oct. 3.

“Anyone who would like to help with the weighing and distributing of produce on Mondays would be more than welcome,” said Jill de la Salle, with AFIS. “Sharing produce not only provides people with fresh locally grown food but generates a conversation about growing food, preparing food and storing food.”

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact de la Salle at 250-546-8335.
