Heritage Week Tea slated for Feb. 21

Here's the full schedule of events and activities for Heritage Week

Learn more about your community’s history as the annual Mission Heritage Week gets underway this weekend.

A plethora of events at a variety of venues have been organized that will help you learn the importance of Mission’s neighbourhoods, such as Silverdale, Silverhill, Stave Falls and Dewdney.

Following is a list of activities:

 

Feb. 5-23:

Good Neighbours exhibit at the Mission Arts Centre, 33150A First Ave. The show focuses on the importance of heritage homes and buildings and the timeless appeal of established, older neighbourhoods, as well as “good neighbours” in modern contexts.

 

Feb. 16:

This is Home: Mission’s Historic Neighborhoods exhibit is at Mission Museum and the Archives on Second Avenue. Official opening ceremonies happen at 1 p.m. at the museum, and 1:30 p.m. at the Archives.

 

Now until Feb. 28:

A display of artifacts featuring prominent local settlers in historic neighbourhoods is set up at the library.

 

Feb. 16-24:

Heritage Week Student Art Display

Student art work from Heritage Park and Hatzic secondary schools will be on display in First Avenue storefronts.

 

Feb. 18:

Annual Heritage Award Presentation at municipal hall, starting at 6 p.m. A reception will be held in the conference room afterwards.

 

Feb. 20:

Ride for Diversity at Lifetime Learning Centre, 3244 Seventh Ave. Queen’s Diamond Jubilee honouree Ken Herar will share his insights into celebrating our diversity and the cultural commitment of many who now participate in the annual ride celebrating diversity. 10 a.m. to noon.

 

Feb. 21:

Heritage Week Tea at the Seniors Activity Centre, 33100 10 Ave. From 2 to 4 p.m. you can enjoy tea served with treats. There will also be entertainment by the vocal trio Time Out and door prizes. Bring a favourite item for the popular Show & Tell event. Everyone is welcome! Admission is by donation.

 

• Introduction to Mission Heritage Gateway at Mission Community Archives, 33215 Second Ave. from 7 to 8 p.m.

This presentation will demonstrate the Archives’ new online database which has been established to provide better access to the broad range of its holdings, including photographs, maps, documents, etc.

 

Feb. 24:

Eighth annual Pioneer Social at Cedarbrooke Chateau, 32331 Seventh Ave. from 2 to 4 p.m. Always a popular event, it acknowledges the early settlers for whom many Mission streets are named after. Bring your elder relatives and enjoy the afternoon socializing. Refreshments will be served. Mission Genealogy Club will also be on hand with a display of heritage family memorabilia and history.
