As school winds down, there is no reason for kids to be bored, thanks to the Summer Reading Club at all branches of the Okanagan Regional Library.
In Vernon, registration is now on and youth services librarian Stephanie Vollick recommends kids register as soon as possible.
“Last year our spots filled up very quickly,” she said. “Each program has separate registration. So take a look and think about what events you plan to attend. Students in Vernon schools should be receiving a handout in June with this schedule. Our theme is Up, Up, and Away!”
For ages six to eight the following are just a few of the events scheduled (parents must remain in the library): Angry Birds June 28; launch into summer with some carnival style games inspired by the Angry Birds video games. Bowl, ring toss and take aim. Make killer bookmarks and maybe borrow a book to use them in.
Magic Show July 3. Be amazed by magician Mike Norden.
BC Wildlife Presents: Birds! July 5, with live animals from the Kamloops zoo in the library.
My Little Sister Ate One Hare July 17 or July 19‚ a glow-in-the-dark black light show followed by a bird craft.
Trivia Challenge July 24 or July 26. Compete in teams showing off your knowledge of birds, planes, superheroes and all things that fly. The winning team will duke it out to win a trivia game to take home.
For ages eight to 12, kids don’t need a parent present during the event but will not be monitored after the program so please arrange punctual transportation. Following are just a few of the programs for this age group: Flight School July 2 or July 4. Listen to tall tales about pilots and make an airplane craft.
Movie: Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief July 3; watch a movie based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan.
Movie: Spiderwick Chronicles‚ July 10; see the movie based on the popular book series.There will be a costume contest, so dress up like a character from a book.
For ages five and under, storytime will run Mondays and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. Parents, please stay and participate.
Teen Summer Reading Club promises free events for teens only, all at 3 p.m. in the library meeting room. Events include movies based on comic books: July 4 X-Men 1st class; July 11 Dark Knight Rises; July 18 Thor; July 25 Iron Man.
Movies based on novels begins in August.
