Medicine goes high-definition

Surrey Memorial Hospital’s operating rooms are getting the clearest possible image thanks to a big donation

Just like many homes have upgraded to high-definition television, Surrey Memorial Hospital’s operating rooms are looking for the clearest possible image.

HD technology will be used in more surgeries following a $71,000 donation from the Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Woodward’s Foundation.

The gift has allowed Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation to purchase a portable High Definition Video Tower System for surgeons who perform operations through small incisions with specialized instruments.

“At Surrey Memorial Hospital, an increasing number of operating room procedures are done using minimally invasive techniques for which surgical teams rely on TV screens and tiny cameras,” said Dr. Peter Doris, the hospital’s chief of surgery. “Going from standard definition to high definition will give us the best visualization possible.”

The HD Video Tower System provides sharper images and wider views. The technology can also be moved from one operating room to another.

“Surgeons come to work here because our operating rooms are so well-equipped,” said foundation president/CEO Jane Adams. “Through its generosity, the P.A. Woodward’s Foundation is helping ensure we can continue to recruit top medical talent.”
