If you love to sing and have fun while experiencing top-notch voice training, the Paul Moore Choir is looking for you.
Starting Tuesday, well-known local tenor Paul Moore begins the fall season for his new choir and everyone is welcome to come out and experience his teaching methods.
“It’s the best $100 a month you’ll spend if you are into music or if you need something that will ground you,” said Moore, who has studied classical music and voice at the highest levels yet also sings, plays guitar, keyboards and saxophone in rock bands.
He is also a musician who happens to have a black belt in Chito Ryu Karate thanks to Troy Shore, and a purple belt in GB Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu thanks to Mario Devault.
“I have sunk to the lowest depths of despair with panic disorder, and survived,” said Moore. “I teach a mixture of tolerance, acceptance of one’s self and of others, as well as strength of character and voice and gentleness of voice through repetition of exercises and thoughts.
“When I perform or teach I use humour to lead people out of fear or rigidity.”
Moore said his students can expect the unexpected in his classes.
“At the beginning of a class or performance, I notice people may not want to follow my ideas, so I try to take their minds off of their normal need for control by being unpredictable.
“It’s all about trust — when I earn their trust they go places they never knew they could, and so do I.”
Moore has sung professionally across Canada and studied with opera greats such as Sherrill Milnes and Louis Quillico.
Moore is seeking soprano, alto, tenor and baritone voices for the new choir.
“Experience is helpful, but not necessary,” said Moore. “I will be teaching as I go, so we all speak the same language.
“I would like to work on rhythm, vocal technique, language and other skills.”
He grew up in Armstrong, but the well-travelled Moore has studied voice at The Juilliard School in New York City, at UVic, McGill, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and the Israeli Vocal Institute.
Moore has sung professionally in most major Canadian cities with opera companies and symphony orchestras as well as numerous national CBC broadcasts and is founder and director of the Okanagan Vocal Arts Festival and Opera in the Park.
Moore’s newest venture begins Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The Essentialist Church of Christ, 2001-45th Ave., Vernon.
