Move for Health Day in Spirit Square

On May 10, recreation and fitness instructors will team up to get people moving at Spirit Square

On May 10, recreation and fitness instructors will team up to get people moving at Spirit Square.

The City of Campbell River and Strathcona Regional District will offer free fitness classes from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

“Our aim is to get as many people as we can outside for exercise,” says Karen Chappell of the city’s recreation department. “Health is so important to this community, and spring is a great time to kick start getting fit in the great outdoors.”

Four different 30-minute fitness classes will make up the event.

Free fitness classes in Spirit Square are open to everyone and include:

  • 11:30: Spin athletics, a circuit training session with spin bikes and other cardio elements
  • Noon: the incredibly popular Zumba, combining Latin dance and aerobics
  • 12: 30: TRX Plus, a workout that combines band and body weight resistance
  • 1 p.m.: Sentao, which transforms a chair into a dance partner. This program strengthens core muscles, burns calories and is tons of fun.

These activities are all part of Move for Health Day, an international event created in 2002 by the World Health Organization to promote physical activity.

Events will be held throughout the province and the world to bring people together in a spirit of fun, inclusivity and support of healthy active living.

To help encourage local businesses to join in the Move for Health Day movement, the recreation and fitness instructors are challenging businesses to try to bring out as many people as possible to the event.

The business or organization with the most participants will win coffee and healthy snacks served by the programming staff at the Community Centre and Sportsplex.
