Saturday is your last chance this summer to view the newest satellite museum of the Vernon Museum and Archives: the Vernon Army Camp Museum.
Open to the public this Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the museum is housed in an original building from the Second World War that served as the camp’s post office from wartime up until the 1970s.
Access to the museum is made through the pedestrian tunnel that runs under Highway 97 between the camp itself and Dieppe Square to the west. Vehicles may park in the lot next to Dieppe Square and visitors may then walk through the tunnel to the museum, situated at the south end of the grassed area. The museum building is clearly marked.
To help celebrate the building’s history, the Vernon Museum has been issued a specially designed cancellation stamp from Canada Post with the words “Vernon Cadet Camp Museum” appearing within the cancel mark. This Saturday afternoon, the new cancellation stamp, with date, will be available at the camp museum. The museum will have on hand specially printed postcard images of the camp taken from the Vernon archives. These can be purchased, with postage, and then stamped with the new cancel.
The museum will reopen next summer.
