Instructors are now being contacted for the Summer Arts Program sponsored by the Summerland Community Arts Council.
This multi-disciplined program has increased in popularity over the past few years, providing children aged three to 14 with the opportunity to spend some leisurely summer days in artistic and creative pursuits.
Experts in various disciplines are being invited to submit a brief summary of their background and experience along with a plan for week-long courses during July and August which could include creative activities ranging from music, drama, dance, clay work, drawing and painting.
Classes typically run from 9 to 11 a.m. with a break for lunch then again from 1 to 3 p.m.
“We would like to offer something new and challenging this year,” said Dianne Hildebrand, acting arts council president.
Susan Scott will conduct an Expressive Arts Tangle Camp for ages 10 and up.
“Kids will spend the first half of each day learning how to systematically break down tangle patterns and rebuild them to create intricate and unique designs and images,” she said. “During the afternoon, we will explore expressive arts modalities such as movement, dance, storytelling and poetry using tangle skills used in the morning.”
Other course suggestions range from outdoor survival skills, studies of aboriginal and other cultures, creating jewelry with FEMO clay, cartooning, encaustic work, poetry and short story writing.
The possibilities for courses depend entirely on the instructors available.
Instructors interested in presenting courses are invited to contact the Summerland Community Arts Council by phoning 250-494-4494 or emailing admin@summerlandarts.com or dropping in at the Arts and Cultural Centre on Wharton Street.
