Inspired by water and the legendary Ogopogo, Grade 7 Beairsto student Raine Simon came up with a winning combination to create a logo for the 2013 Vernon Kids of Steel Triathlon.

The contest was organized by Beairsto teacher Janice Irwin, who teaches art to three classes of Grade 6/7 students.

“One of the focuses at Beairsto is healthy living and as well, one of the learning outcomes for art is to design a logo so I thought it would be a good fit with the KOS,” she said. “I told the kids about KOS and about triathlon sports. We talked about the characteristics of a powerful logo and then they either worked with someone as a team or they worked individually. They had fun.”

For her winning design, Raine will receive a complimentary entry to the June 22 event. The winning logo will be used on posters, on the Web site, on the Facebook page and on T-shirts.

“We felt that Raine’s design really captured the fun factor and local appeal we hope to provide through this event,” said co-race director Cindy Garvin.

The Kids of Steel Vernon Triathlon is a non-profit event working in conjunction with Kids Sport. Having already applied for and received a grant from ViaSport, KOS Vernon is working towards their goal of keeping entry fees low so that all kids can participate in this event.
