• Oceanside residents looking for a big screen movie fix could now catch a bus to Nanaimo for the latest blockbuster. A new three-month pilot project began, seeing the Nanaimo Regional Transit System offer Friday evening service on the No. 90 inter-city connector to Woodgrove and Rutherford Mall.

• With the passing of the year 2000 having marked the deadline for firearms owners to either obtain a license or give up their guns. Oceanside RCMP said they are receiving a steady flow of firearms being turned into the detachment. About 30 guns were turned in over the holiday period, mainly rifles.

• Record snowfalls created headaches for local residents and merchants this week, delaying a number of regular services and driving residents indoors to avoid the hazardous conditions. The heavy weather also kept Hydro crews busy when two downed power lines caused outages of up to two hours in Coombs, Qualicum and Errington.
