High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is the topic of discussion as the Vernon Prostate Cancer Support Group meets Monday.
HIFU therapy is a new type of cancer treatment. The treatment is given using a machine that gives off high frequency sound waves, which deliver a strong beam to a specific part of a cancer. Some cells die when this high intensity ultrasound beam is focused directly onto them. This minimally invasive therapy can be used in conjunction with radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
Following the showing of a DVD, a prostate cancer survivor is guest speaker at the meeting and will share his experiences as a HIFU patient.
The meeting takes place Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the People Place, 3402-27th Ave. Everyone is welcome to attend, and prostate cancer survivors will be in attendance to share their experiences.
