With her passion for the environment, Claire Macdonald was the choice to earn this year’s bursary from the Armstrong Spallumcheen Environmental Trust (ASET)
The Pleasant Valley secondary school 2011 graduate was awarded the $1,000 bursary recently by ASET, which awards local students pursuing the solutions toward a return of global environmental health.
Macdonald’s main interest is in environmental journalism. She is a champion of high energy dance, and she also plays piano. She is now in her first term at the University of Victoria.
ASET was established in 2002 by members who felt that the earth’s resources were being consumed at an alarming rate and increasing pollution was rapidly degrading the environment.
In order for society to meet its future environmental challenges, ASET’s members believe it is crucial to support motivated young people in their education in fields related to the environment. An annual bursary was established to encourage local students to enter post-secondary studies in a field related to environmental sustainability. Students can prepare for careers in forest sustainability, development of non-polluting fuel sources, water protection, or wildlife biology, just to name a few eligible fields.
