More than 500 students will learn a little more about Canadian history this year thanks to their participation in school heritage fairs.
This year’s Vernon and District Heritage Fair takes place April 7 with seven local schools participating. Students enter projects in their school fairs and projects chosen from these fairs will then enter the district competition.
“Students are encouraged to explore and celebrate Canadian history through many different mediums and this year’s fair will be special as we recognize Canada’s 150th birthday and Vernon’s 125th,” said Lesley Hayes, 2017 Heritage Fair Committee member with the North Okanagan Optimist Club, which sponsors the fair each year. “The students chosen to participate in the fair will spend an exciting day of judging, fun, food and entertainment.”
Each student will receive a commemorative T-shirt and recognition for their participation in the fair. Awards will be presented for outstanding projects.
“Last year, 29 Vernon students were invited to the regional fair in Kelowna and from there, two worthy projects moved on to the provincial fair in Vancouver,” said Hayes.
The Vernon & District Heritage Fair takes place April 7 at the Schubert Centre, with an open house from 6 to 7 p.m. to give everyone in the community an opportunity to view the projects and attend the awards ceremony.
As well, the Heritage Fair Committee is looking for volunteers to assist in the presentation of the fair, helping with registration, chaperones, assisting with crafts and in other ways.
If you can be of assistance the day of the fair or for a few hours leading up to the fair, please call Hayes at 250-275-2676 or Jane Advent at 250-542-9295.
