Three local students have shown they have the skills to win at the recent Skills Canada competition.
All from the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District, the students brought home medals from the TradeX competition in Abbotsford last month.
A.L. Fortune student Jacob Wall edged classmate and last year’s provincial gold medal winner Kurtis Gordey for gold in the automotive collision repair technician competition. This year, Gordey came close and brought home a silver.
The district’s other medal came in the automotive painting competition, where A.L. Fortune student Conor Ahola won bronze.
And the district’s two other participants, Logan Green of A.L. Fortune and Gavin Vliet of Pleasant Valley secondary school, also did well, though they were not quite in the medals, said district career supervisor Mark Marino.
“I think it’s the first time the school district has had students win gold meals in two consecutive years in the same category,” he said. “Competition at this level and winning medals is a real testament to the hard work and skills of the students, supported by their teachers, employers and families.
“The students taking part in the provincial competition were excellent ambassadors of the school district.”
