With instructors Len and Yvonne Leduc supplying the expertise, 20 Charles Bloom secondary school students recently completed archery lessons at the White Valley Community Centre in Lumby.
The Leducs, who are with Cherryville Archers, taught the students, from Grades 7 to 11, in 15 one-hour sessions.
Students choose one course per quarter and are given one credit for each of the four courses of interest they choose under the X Block in their curriculum. Other choices include Hunter Safety, Food Safety, Healthy Cooking, Hatha Yoga, Learning Guitar, Fly Fishing, Photography, Boot Camp and Basketball.
“Each group has a teacher sponsor and instructors are volunteers from various clubs from Vernon and area,” said Len Leduc. “And while we supplied the expertise, teacher April Olson graded the students on teamwork, participation, cooperation and leadership.
“Students learned how to consistently anchor, aim and shoot, as well as how to set up an indoor archery range and fletch an arrow (attach the feathers). Compound bows, aluminum arrows and targets and safety net were supplied by the Aboriginal Education Department of School District 22.”
Leduc said the final class saw a 3D deer target set up at 12 yards’ distance, with marked arrows used to determine scores. Each student shot three arrows, with student Sidney Lang achieving 30 out of a possible 30.
Olson said close to 30 students registered for the second class, which began Nov. 25.
