George Vanier Elementary students Kaitlyn Smith (right) rests her head on her “night sky bookcase” she made along with her partners Colette Carless (left) and Malini Guntilaka (not shown).
Students at the school were given a metal bracket (seen supporting the legs of the bookcase) and asked to design and build something as part of the ‘WikiSeat’ showcase last week.
Developed by two American college students, the WikiSeat project challenges students to source materials for and build their own seat. Every student is provided with a metal “catalyst” or structural support for a chair, with the goal of building a functional seat. Students are tasked with finding materials and developing the skills for building on their own. A WikiSeat challenge can be incorporated into any core subject, from math to English, according to its founders.
