The Frogger 15K is back by popular demand this fall.
The 15 kilometre fun run takes participants through downtown Campbell River, starting and finishing at Spirit Square.
The event is hosted by Greenways Land Trust, a charitable organization established in 1996 to help maintain the Beaver Lodge Lands. It’s run mostly by volunteers who last year put in more than 3,900 hours.
Erin Nowack, operations manager of Greenways, said this year’s event takes place Sept. 20.
“We want to attract people to the downtown core and increase sport tourism,” Nowack said.
But the major goal of the fun run is to raise awareness for the completion of the 25 kilometre Greenways Loop – a pedestrian and cycling route that circles Campbell River and includes the Beaver Lodge Lands, the Sea Walk and the Jubilee Connector.
The final stage of the loop is designed but awaiting funding and is intended to stretch from the Campbell River sign at Jubilee Parkway to Maryland Drive, where the Sea Walk ends.
Proceeds from the Frogger will go towards Greenways Land Trust projects, such as the Greenways Loop.
Last year, the event raised $3,500 towards promoting the completion of the Greenways Loop.
More than 100 people participated, travelling from as far away as Port Hardy, Powell River, Port Alberni and Ucluelet to take part.
This year’s Frogger begins at Spirit Square, heads west along 16th Avenue, goes south up the ERT Road to the Beaver Lodge Forest Lands and returns participants via the same route, north, to the finish line at Spirit Square.
Runners of all levels are welcome to register as individuals or as a relay team, with three runners each tackling five kilometres. New this year is a kids race, the Tadpole Trot, which is being sponsored by the River Runners running club.
This year marks the second annual edition of the Frogger 15K.
