Last year’s Investors Group Walk for Memories, held in 20 locations around the province, including Vernon, raised more than $650,000 to help support the thousands of people whose lives are impacted by dementia.
People are invited to start thinking of forming teams now for the 2012 walk to take place Jan. 29. Teams which register online before Nov. 30 will automatically be entered to win a Nintendo Wii, Wii Fit Plus and a Wii Balance Board. Once registered online, teams can customize their Investors Group Walk for Memories fundraising page with photos and messages to get more team members and let others know what they are doing. The top fundraising team in the province will win $250 towards a night out for the team.
Every dollar raised through the Investors Group Walk for Memories goes to support British Columbians impacted by dementia, through research, education, information, help and support.
More than 70,000 British Columbians have Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, and about 10,000 of these are under the age of 65.
“Plus, you’ll be doing something good for yourself. Walking is good for the heart, and research shows that what’s good for your heart is good for your brain. Let’s make this the best year ever,” said Mark Madryga, meteorologist for Global TV, honourary provincial chair for the Investors Group Walk for Memories.
The Vernon Investors Group Walk for Memories is dedicated to Ron Houston, a well-known curler who was manager of the Vernon Curling Club for 25 years, retiring in 1999.
