Women today are stretched for time. Many struggle with full-time careers, full-time motherhood and full-time expectations to keep it all in balance.
Pepper in the pressure of trying to be ‘Pinterest perfect,’ it can be a challenge just to carve out enough time in the day to wash one’s hair.
From social media and radio commercials to movies and magazines, unrealistic stereotypical expectations are everywhere, especially for young, impressionable women.
But one would be hard pressed to find them between the covers of Urbanique Magazine — a sassy and refreshingly honest new publication from Black Press, which makes its debut on Friday, Sept.30.
The quarterly magazine celebrates ‘real women’ in the local community — moms, daughters, sisters, aunts who can handle a drill, strive in their careers, raise children and prepare a healthy meal, according to content curator Shelley Levis.
“Our goal is to give you more than just pretty pictures and makeup ads,” said Levis, who also runs the blog sowanddipity.com.
“We address topics that matter and are relevant to women right now.
We get it. We are it.”
Inside Urbanique is a variety of local stories, tips, recipes and more.
“This magazine is for all those ladies out there who want direct, simple ideas on everything, from how to grow fresh herbs on a windowsill, to preparing lunches in two minutes or less that your kids will actually love,” said Levis.
Alongside Levis is Urbanique’s editor, Kristyl Clark, who is also the founder of blogazine ValleyMom.ca and a former reporter with the Langley Times.
“This is an absolute dream-come-true,” Clark said.
“I’m so tired of being expected to live vicariously through the body of a super model, nor do I want my two girls to grow up thinking they have to look or act a certain way to fit in. I have hips and cellulite — and they aren’t going anywhere … that’s okay with me.”
Urbanique will be arriving on limited doorsteps on Friday, and can also be found on our website, langleytimes.com, and in print at the following businesses:
