Volunteers needed for computer skills training

Navigating the mysteries of a computer is made easier thanks to the Computer Support Program, which pairs volunteers with adult clients

From sending email to watching videos on YouTube, using a computer is something most people do on a daily basis.

But for adults who are struggling to get comfortable with basic computer skills, there is help.

The Junction Literacy Centre is partnering with the Okanagan Regional Library, Vernon branch, to provide a Computer Support Program where community volunteers help adult clients, one on one, who are struggling with the basics on their computer or tablet (PC or Apple technology).

“Most clients need help with understanding the Internet, setting up and using email, managing photos and saving files.  Some need help with the switch from a computer to a tablet,” said Kathy Wylie, program coordinator.

The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. The volunteer commitment is two hours per week. A regular tutor covers a two-hour time slot each week and sees two clients in that time, each for one hour. There are also back-up or spare tutors to cover if you can’t be at your regular tutoring time.

Volunteers must provide a recent Criminal Record Check (accessed via the Junction at no cost via the Ministry of Justice) and attend an orientation to the program and the library.

“If you are comfortable with your basic computer skills and enjoy working with others, this may be the volunteer opportunity for you,” said Wylie, adding that she hopes to start the program Oct. 4.

If you would like to volunteer or need more information, please contact Wylie at the Junction Literacy Centre for more information on becoming a volunteer for this rewarding program: kwylie@junctionliteracy.ca or 250-549-2216.

Adults who want tutoring help, please contact the Reference Desk at the Vernon library at 250-542-7610 to book a time.
