Has someone else’s drug or alcohol use negatively affected your life? Are you worried about someone you love’s substance use? Next weekend’s family workshop hosted by Axis Intervention in Vernon might be of benefit to you.
Since 1999 the experienced professionals at Axis have been helping Okanagan families overcome addiction through their counselling, intervention and treatment programs.
Facing Addiction as a Family is an educational, empowering and transformative weekend workshop for people enduring the pain of someone else’s drinking or drug use.
The weekend intensive retreat is designed to help individuals better understand the impact addiction has had on their lives and how to better support themselves in their own path of recovery and healing
“Bringing this workshop to Vernon families seems to fill a distinct gap in the services available locally,” said Darrin Taylor, addictions counsellor and interventionist at Axis. “There isn’t enough being done to acknowledge the impact of addiction on families.
“There have always been support groups available but we saw a need to provide people with a confidential professional environment to learn about this illness and acquire some truly effective tools necessary to make lasting changes in their lives.”
Participants can also expect to be introduced to long-term support programs available in the community as well as options for treatment if someone they love needs help.
“It can take time for families to adjust to a new life of recovery,” said Taylor. “This is why it is essential to be equipped with knowledge and tools to be able to navigate the future in a healthy and peaceful way together.”
Facing Addiction as a Family takes place Sept. 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sept. 19 and 20 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The workshop is hosted and presented by experienced, licensed addictions counsellors. Lunch will be provided, along with snacks, tea and coffee. The cost for the weekend is $295. Some space is still available and pre-registration is required by calling Axis at 250-545-1898.
