A 47-year-old truck driver from Abbotsford is suspected to have been impaired when he caused a multi-vehicle accident early this morning (Friday) on Highway 1 near Hope.

Cpl. Dave Doyle of Fraser Valley Traffic Services said the driver was travelling west near Hope and the Hunter Creek Scales at about 4 a.m. when he lost control of his trailer, which was loaded with sand and bags of gravel.

The load was scattered over the highway, causing one semi to crash, and a motorcyclist to lose control. Another semi managed to stop after running over the debris.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital and was released. Doyle said there were no serious injuries.

He said alcohol and/or drugs, as well as speed, may have been factors in the crash. The Abbotsford man was given a 24-hour driving suspension and a 90-day driving prohibition. He has been released on a promise to appear in Chilliwack court in October.

The crash shut down traffic in the area for a few hours. As of noon, one westbound lane was open on Highway 1, and it was not known when the second lane would re-open.
