A third person has been sentenced for his role in the 2008 killings of Lisa Dudley and Guthrie McKay in Mission.
Justin Andrew MacKinnon, originally charged with two counts of first degree murder, pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter in Vancouver Supreme Court on Monday, Nov. 25. He has been sentenced to seven years in jail, minus time served.
Earlier this year in July Bruce Ian Main also pled guilty to two counts of manslaughter, and Jack Douglas Woodruff pled guilty to two counts of first degree murder in March 2012.
Tom Holden, the fourth person charged with first degree murder in connection with the couple’s death, is still awaiting trial.
“This has been an extremely demanding investigation that has demanded and garnered an abundance of dedication and commitment from the IHIT investigators,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound on behalf of IHIT. “It is very rewarding to see the accused, who have played a role in these tragic murders, ultimately face the consequence.”
Dudley and McKay were shot in their Greenwood Drive home in rural Mission more than five years ago. McKay was pronounced dead on the scene, while Dudley, who was shot twice in the neck, was paralyzed from her injuries. She survived four days inside the house before she was found by a neighbour. She died on the way to hospital.
Her parents, Rosemarie and Mark Surakka are proceeding with a charter case against the federal government claiming her rights were violated when police failed to properly investigate a shots fired called in the area.
