Two Nelson backcountry skiers were located Tuesday after Salmo RCMP received a missing report Monday.
The woman and man skiing toward Ripple Ridge Cabin at the top of Kootenay Pass were found hiking the following day in an area near the Department of Highways’ works yard.
The skiers apparently became disorientated late Monday in foggy conditions on their return to their parked vehicle at Kootenay Pass Summit, according to Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment.
“Both skiers were cold and wet but in good health. The skiers were taken to the highway’s office via snowmobile. Both subjects were examined by a doctor and have now departed the area,” he said in a news release. “It is not known at this time if the skiers spent the night outdoors.”
Nelson Search and Rescue were contacted Monday but for safety reasons could not send people out that night. Nelson Search and Rescue (SAR), with the assistance of other West Kootenay SAR groups, deployed at Kootenay Pass Summit area early Tuesday.
