The Greater Vernon landfill is closed until further notice because of a fire.

A fire burning at the Greater Vernon landfill means the facility will not be open for business.

The Regional District of North Okanagan has decided to close the landfill down until further notice because of the fire currently being fuelled by wood debris and grass.

Dale Danallanko, recycling operations manager, says the closure is necessary “to allow an unhindered response by firefighting personnel and to ensure the safety of customers.”

Blue bag collection and residential garbage services will continue as usual. However, customers requiring landfill services can use the landfill at 3367 Powerhouse Rd. in Spallumcheen.

Updates regarding the closure will be provided as the situation develops,” said Danallanko.
