Brush fires along Highway 1 deemed suspicious

Fire crews battle multiple fires along the Trans-Canada Highway Monday afternoon

Brush fires along the Trans-Canada Highway near Thetis Lake kept local fire departments busy Monday.

View Royal Fire Rescue responded to reports of a brush fire near Six Mile Road at about 12:10 p.m. Monday, followed by reports of second and a third fire along the Trans-Canada Highway north of the Millstream Road exit.

Initial reports to media suggested that at least the first fire appeared to be suspicious.

Langford Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Chris Aubrey said seven firefighters responded with two engines and a brush truck from their department.

One of the biggest concerns with a fire close to the highway is traffic safety, Aubrey said. He thanked the West Shore RCMP for responding quickly to handle traffic control while firefighters from View Royal and Langford extinguished the fires. He also cited the great co-operation between departments for handling the situation quickly, including Colwood Fire Rescue, which assisted with water supply.
