Bus fire shuts down northbound traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway in Langford

Highway 1 northbound traffic still congested after fire extinguished

A BC Transit bus erupted into flames on the Trans-Canada Highway south of the Millstream exit just in time for the afternoon commute.

All northbound lanes were closed between the Thetis and Millstream exits as crews worked to extinguish the blaze. The fire broke out shortly after 1:30 p.m. and was quickly extinguished. After more than an hour two of the three northbound lanes reopened with the right lane remaining closed as crews continued clean up efforts.

Some vehicles were able to detour through Colwood around the closure but traffic in the area was heavily congested for several hours.

No passengers were on board the bus when the fire broke out and the driver was able to exit  safely.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
