Bylaw urges good neighbours

Every summer, the City of Vernon receives complaints about overgrown or neglected properties.

Every summer, the City of Vernon receives complaints about overgrown or neglected properties.

Under the good neighbour bylaw, property owners are responsible for maintaining their property as well as the adjacent boulevard and lane areas.

“Quite frequently, it is the small things that make the difference — the trimming of a hedge, removing sucker shoots from a tree in the vision clearance area or the mowing of a boulevard,” said Clint Kanester, bylaw compliance manager.

“It’s all about getting along and thinking of others while being a part of the community.”

Property owners are responsible for:

n Cutting any vegetation growing into the lane or along the edge of the lane adjacent to your property, and keeping property clear of overgrowth or accumulation of dead landscaping, vegetation, noxious weeds or other growths.

n Removing any waste vegetation, grass clippings or rubbish from the boulevard or lane adjacent to your property, removing all rubbish materials that accumulate on the property, and preventing overflow or accumulation of rubbish around any container on private property;

n Trimming vegetation extending over property lines into the right of way that effects vehicles or pedestrians, and trimming any vegetation within the vision clearance area near intersection corners (street or lane) to the traffic bylaw requirements.
