At their Aug. 26 board meeting, Cariboo Regional District (CRD) directors endorsed the resolution from the South Cariboo Joint Committee (SCJC) regarding recreation pass considerations. There will now be a two-tiered rate system for drop-in activities at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre.
This means non-residents will be charged a higher fee compared to the corresponding residential rate.
The directors endorsed a recommendation from the SCJC to create a drop-in rate that is 50 per cent higher for patrons who do not have a recreation pass.
The increased rate will apply to public skating and drop-in hockey at the recreation centre.
These rates will be in effect when the board approves the actual fees and charges bylaw amendment at its next meeting (Sept. 23).
The objective of the recreation pass is to ensure residents within the taxation area do not subsidize participation by residents from non-contributing areas.
Therefore, staff notes some other requirements for a recreation pass that have not changed, including:
• A recreation pass is also required for registration in leagues that use the sub-regional recreation facilities, such as minor hockey, adult hockey, the curling club, ball field and soccer groups.
• Residents living inside the South Cariboo Recreation Taxation Area receive a recreation pass at no charge because they contribute to the operation of these public facilities through property taxes.
• Residents living outside of the taxation boundary must purchase a recreation pass at a current cost of $200 per family that is in lieu of the sub-regional recreation tax, which is not collected on their properties.
