Carrie Powell-Davidson has announced her candidacy for the vacant seat on Parksville’s city council.
The byelection, necessary following the resignation of Al Grier in July, is set for Oct. 22.
Powell-Davidson served two terms on Parksville’s city council between 2008 and 2014. She did not run in the last municipal election and was the Federal Liberal Party candidate in Courtenay-Alberni in the 2015 federal election, where she finished third behind the NDP and Conservative candidates.
“I am running in this election because Parksville is important to me and this community deserves experienced and dedicated representation,” Powell-Davidson, the city’s Citizen of the Year in 2011, said in a news release this week.
Powell-Davidson also said she has resigned from her position with Parksville Museum, where she was employed as the program co-ordinator.
Powell-Davidson said that while much has been accomplished over the past few years, there are still many outstanding issues that need to be dealt with including the housing situation, diversification of our local economy, B.C. Ferries and health care.
“Some of the issues I heard on the campaign trail last year are not unlike what I’ll hear this year,” she said. “The residents of Parksville deserve a councillor who will be in the community, listening and working together to find solutions and they need a strong voice when it comes to communicating with other levels of government. Those were some of my strengths when I was on council before and they will be again.”
Powell-Davidson said she brings to her candidacy a proven track record of hard work, preparedness and fairness. She has vast community involvement with a wide variety of boards including the Oceanside Homelessness Task Force, Old Age Pensioners, Youthlink, and Nature’s Trust Brant Wildlife Festival. — NEWS Staff
