The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is urging the public to take extra care near the Okanagan River.
A press released issued by the provincial governemnt on April 13 warns residents and visitors that the Okanagan River’s deep and fast-flowing current requires heightened safety awareness during the snowmelt season.
The snowpack this year is expected to cause higher runoff into the Okanagan River from Okanagan Lake for the next several weeks. River flows between Okanagan Lake and Osoyoos Lake are currently above normal and are expected to remain high throughout the spring.
Adults are urged to keep children and pets under close supervision at all times when near the river banks. If going into the river, take precautionary measures such as using a safe watercraft and wearing a personal flotation device.
