City announces first results of management review

The position of director of corporate services position and the creation of a new position titled director of community services.

The first results of the city’s management review have been revealed and with them came a change in duties for director of corporate services Theresa Kingston.

“The change being announced today will see the elimination of the Director of Corporate Services position and the creation of a new position titled Director of Community Services. This new position will encompass the duties of the vacant position of Director of Parks, Recreation and Heritage, and also include the community development function,” stated a media release from the city of Port Alberni.

The new position will continue to be filled by Kingston and encompass the duties left vacant by the retirement of former director of parks, recreation and heritage Scott Kenny. Kenny retired this summer. It will also include community development but what will happen to Kingston’s other role as deputy city manager remains to be seen.

“Ms. Kingston is a tremendous asset to our organization and community, having served the public for 38 years in various capacities” said Mayor Mike Ruttan. “Her longstanding commitment to help move Port Alberni forward as a thriving and healthy community is greatly valued and we look forward to her continuing contributions in this new role.”

This is the first announcement to come from the management review. It was commissioned from Judy Rogers Consulting by council earlier this year and adopted on Oct. 13.

“The review has been undertaken to help advance the City’s Strategic Plan and deliver municipal services in the most cost-effective way,” stated the media release. Total costs for the review budgeted for $50,000 came in at $52,347.

The changes will come into affect on Nov. 15, 2015.
